What would you do if you thought your child might be possessed? Mentally ill? Or, just plain evil? Zoje Stage explores one mother's struggle with this this possibility in "Baby Teeth." This novel is a blend of domestic psychological suspense and horror, with the chapters flipping between Suzette and her 7-year-old non-communicative daughter, Hanna. It's intriguing watching Hanna's mind at work as she plots to take down her mother. I also found Suzette's guilt over her parenting skills to be fascinating. What I liked best about this book, though, was the fact that no matter how much I disliked Hanna and her wicked behavior, I still felt a healthy measure of sadness for this child who, despite all she does, is in some ways still just an innocent. I was impressed with Stage's ability to pull at all the emotional strings like that. I think my main complaint was the depth of language that Hanna seemed to have within her. Would a 7-year-old know all those words? Well, maybe one who is possessed might..... I look forward to much more from Stage!
