Beautifully written, emotionally intense story of a marriage, set in modern urban Nigeria. Narrated alternately by wife Yejide and husband Akin, who share intimacies and betrayals as they respond in different ways to family and cultural pressures (including unwilling polygamy) and personal tragedies including parenting children with sickle cell. Ayobami Adebayo 's strength is her unyielding compassion for her characters. The best compliment I can pay is that I finished reading with highly conflicted feelings about one character whose actions really merit contempt. An enlightening portrait of extended family relationships. Particularly strong is Yejide's journey from unhappy daughterhood to romantic young adulthood to heartbreaking motherhood. Ends with a reunion and the hope of reconciliation.
