The Age of Bowie

How David Bowie Made a World of Difference

"Ziggy played guittttaaarrrrr!" Man, has this (2016) been a rough year for musical icons: Prince, Leonard Cohen, Merle Haggard. Nobody hit me as hard as Bowie's death at the start of the year. Maybe we should've known then that 2016 was going to be a sh*** show. I'm sure we'll see a flurry of Bowie-related books and tributes in the upcoming months, as writers try to make sense of a massively influential and truly singular artist. English journalist Paul Morley's "The Age of Bowie" is, while earnest and timely, a bit of a mess. It feels like he had a lot to say, but couldn't decide if he wanted to do a bio, a focus on Bowie's music, a memoir, or an impressionistic tribute, so he just put everything in the book with little regard for flow or concision. I'll read most anything about Bowie, but this was disappointing and didn't offer up much new for the serious fan.
