Lawhon tells the story of the final flight and crash of the Hindenburg in May 1937. The story unfolds through the eyes of the stewardess, the journalist, the navigator, and the cabin boy. All are German nationals who work for the zeppelin company. The other main character is the American who is returning home to visit family after working in Germany. Over 3 days, in very close quarters, the reader gets a view of the impending World War II disaster through the various characters' eyes. As the author states in the Afterward, this is her theory of what happened on that fateful flight. She also acknowledges that people have been debating this accident for over 80 years now.
