There are some harsh comments about this. I went into it not expecting much and was surprised by both the humor and the darkness. SNL alum Kristen Wiig excels at playing the kind of eccentric characters that Zooey Deschanel and Miranda July make cute and twee. Wiig is able to find the more unstable and unlikable qualities in these characters, which is perhaps what viewers are reacting against. However, I think it's a strength of the film and of Wiig that they don't sentimentalize or cute-ify her character. I liked it better than another film where she plays a damaged character, "The Skeleton Twins." Wiig's ably supported by James Marsden, Joan Cusack, Linda Cardellini, Jennifer Jason Leigh, and Wes Bentley. Shira Piven (sister of Jeremy) wrote and directed and her husband, director Adam McCay ("The Big Short"), produced.
