An interesting second installment to the Southern Reach series. This book was a lot slower than the first. It focuses more on the bureaucracy back at the very dysfunctional Southern Reach organization and follows a new acting director who is tasked with researching what happened to the 12th expedition, what Area X is all about, and what is going on at Southern Reach. If this was a TV series, the second book would be the typical second season--focusing more on character development and less action. However, it does pave the way for a (hopefully) exciting and unsual finale.
