When Emma’s mum contracts breast cancer, the whole family has to pack up and leave Japan for a year, where Emma had lived most of her life. As she struggles with homesickness, her mother’s health, and guilt (she left tsunami-swept Japan), she starts to make new friends and get involved in her new community. Utterly predictable (and worse, written in free-verse . . . not my favorite thing)—but still beautifully written. And, as any former expat knows, sharply realistic. (Searching niche-market grocery stores for ingredients for your favorite homecooked meals?—I’ve been there!)
