Hearing this memoir in the author's own voice is a gift. And if, like me, you thought of Winterson's fiction as high-brow or self-consciously esoteric because of its experimental or nontraditional narratives, listening to "Why Be Happy" will dispel that notion. There is something tremendously reassuring in learning that Winterson is never sure of herself, but simply writing what she feels she must in order to survive (and she's definitely had a lot to survive). I don't think any book I read in 2015 made me feel more genuine hope and wonder than this one.
