This is a 2000 British-American period drama directed by Ridley Scott. Crowe portrays the fictional character, loyal Roman general Maximus Decimus Meridius. Commodus, the ambitious son of Emperor Marcus Aurelius, murders his father and seizes the throne. Reduced to slavery, Maximus rises through the ranks of the gladiatorial arena to avenge the murders of his family and his emperor. Although the film is NOT based on the historical events, it is such a well-crafted story that you will NOT regret to see this movie. The story somewhat reminds me of "Ben-Hur."
