** UNTIL NOW, THIS MOVIE HAD NEVER BEEN SEEN BY ME ** [No, honestly, it's true. I had seen a couple of bits of it on TV but the commercials interrupting things broke my interest enough I switched over to the news, or Monty Python, or an episode of Space: 1999 (oh, Maya...) or something.] Let's just replace the word "heartwarming" in the dictionary with "Spielberg", shall we? It'll be so much easier; it's fewer letters, and it'll force me to learn how to spell the guy's name properly once and for all. This Spielberg film is directed by Steven Spielberg and lives up to the reputation it so richly deserves. The tale is told with finesse and just enough complexity to make the whole thing simply work from start to finish. While it does get a bit bogged down in the end of the first act, and the second one has a bit of a struggle to get up-to-speed, it'll keep you riveted throughout the entire third one right through the credits rolling. An interesting point is that Mr. Spielberg has recanted his position on the "Special Edition" being the only one worth watching, and not viewing the "ship interior" scenes as being a mistake. Thus, the "Director's Cut" is preferred, being an amalgam of the theatrical and special editions, minus the aforementioned final views of Dreyfus' character inside the mothership. While some of the characters are flat, the acting makes the film overall the magical, amazing, visually stunning, and — it's really the only word — Spielberg experience that watching a film really ought to be.
