Bear and Rat are having a pleasant picnic. Rat reminds Bear that it is Bear's birthday and that he has a surprise for him. But they are interrupted by an empty boat floating by. Bear and Rat row it back the way it came from. They find a hat, a fishing pole, and finally the man that belongs to all four items. They attempt to row back to shore, but the boat is too heavy. Eventually they make it back to shore where Rat and Bear return to their picnic basket and Bear gets not only a pleasant adventure, but a birthday surprise. The illustrations were created in pen and ink and watercolor. They are finely detailed and have beautiful and vibrant colors. Children of all ages will enjoy them. This was a very pleasant, laid back story about two friends having a nice day together. This book would be perfect to read on a day when you want a more quiet story. I recommend it for any age up to 7.
