The best book in the series so far. Alanna leaves the palace for a far more interesting environment, and her gender is no longer a secret. The pace slows down so that the book covers just one year of her life, and that means that events and relationships get more depth. As you'd expect, she's a more mature character than in the previous books, and I was happy to get to know here without Jon or George around (since I found the romance in the earlier books a bit predictable and perfunctory).
