There seems to be too many things going on in this book. I wish the plot had been narrowed down a bit to help progress the story quicker.

This book is so great! It's got everything: complex family relationships explored in detail, people negotiating their own and others' mental health, mean girls in middle school, preteens discovering things about themselves, first crushes, ghosts, adventures in a hurricane. Emotional, at turns tense and nostalgic, it made me feel twelve again in all the best and worst ways. I definitely recommend it for any middle grade reader.

And if you're on the lookout for books set in the Caribbean, books that feature kids of color as main characters, and/or books with girls exploring same-gender romance/attraction, written by an author from those backgrounds, this is it, add it to your lists!
