Efren's parents crossed the boarder before he was born to give him a better life. Now Efren is 12 and his mother is deported back to Mexico. It is now Efren's job to care for his little brother and sister while his dad works overtime to help get the money to get Ama back. This book tells the story in a way that is so relatable. I feel Efren's fear and his worry. It is a story of resilience and hope. I would recommend this book for anyone who wants to learn about the experiences of 1st generation Mexican Americans. Grades 4 and up.

Realistic fiction about a middle schooler, Efrén, whose mother is deported to Mexico. A slice of life of caring for siblings, navigating school, and deciding whether to start trying to make a bigger difference for his school, community, and country. I'd recommend to educators and kids asking for realistic, emotionally complex stories.
