A pretty adult movie that goes over how much things in the middle east are messy, but still making most of the characters very human and relatable. I think its a solid watch but I do suggest you make sure check it out before showing your kids as it can be pretty heavy at times.

Very well-told, animated story of the misogyny that Afghani women face under a Taliban regime. The immediate family, living in Kabul. is warmly portrayed with two daughters, a young infant son, and a mysteriously missing older son. Parvana, the loyal and hard-working middle daughter, boldly figures out that cutting her hair and dressing as a boy is the best way to earn money and help her family after both her parents are beaten (and her father dragged off to torture and prison). This war story-telling and systemic oppression of women is not sugarcoated---violence literally and figuratively lurks around the corner. The writer wisely leaves the ending hopeful but open-ended. Not suitable for children under 13 due to its themes.

This movie is rated PG in Western Canada and therefore the DVD is catalogued Junior in the library. However, the rating is PG-13 in the USA and over 12yrs in most countries. I would strongly advise against young children watching this without parental supervision as the real-life themes and vivid images of war, mistreatment of women and lack of safety for children in Afghanistan are rather disturbing. This is an excellent animated movie version of a wonderful children's book but I would highly recommend re-cataloguing it as an adult or teen DVD.

Really good story, but it is sad. Great animation as well.

This film's PG-13 rating is justified. I would not recommend that anyone under the age of thirteen watch this film.

Excellent. So good, gives a human voice to the conflicts and problems in Afghanistan. Not for young children though - age 10 and up.

Absolutely brilliant! Everything about this film - the animation, story, music, voice acting, was mesmerizing! I remember reading the book by Deborah Ellis years ago when I was in Grade 5 and finding it very educational and intense. It's a suspenseful story about a brave girl who must pose as a boy in Afghanistan when her father is taken to prison. The movie got pretty heavy in parts, so I would say it's maybe for ages 10 and up, depending on the child. (Although it is an excellent film to spark discussion if you watch it as a family, in my opinion.)

I really appreciated this movie. It gives us from other cultures the idea of what these women and families have to live through and what it takes to have determination and willpower. Great movie, I was just made aware of the book. Great story and can be used for educational purposes

Not a children's movie. I recommend it though very graphicly sad at times. Much different than the usual animated movies. No CGI here. Fantastic Eastern fantacy style, coloring and story telling. Nominated for Oscar in 2018.

Sulayman: My name is Sulayman! My mother is a writer. My father is a teacher. And my sisters always fight each other. One day, I found a toy on the street. I picked it up. It exploded. I don't remember what happened after that because it was the end.
