A moving story of love, friendship, grief, healing, and the magical bond between a woman and her dog. When a woman unexpectedly loses her lifelong best friend and mentor, she finds herself burdened with the unwanted dog he has left behind. Her own battle against grief is intensified by the mute suffering of the dog, a huge Great Dane traumatized by the inexplicable disappearance of its master, and by the threat of eviction: dogs are prohibited in her apartment building. While others worry that grief has made her a victim of magical thinking, the woman refuses to be separated from the dog except for brief periods of time. Isolated from the rest of the world, increasingly obsessed with the dog's care, determined to read its mind and fathom its heart, she comes dangerously close to unraveling. But while troubles abound, rich and surprising rewards lie in store for both of them. Elegiac and searching, The Friend is both a meditation on loss and a celebration of human-canine devotion

I didn't like the writing style, or the format of, I guess, writing a letter to a friend who died. Couldn't get very far.

Well -- how could I have never known the name of this superlative writer? -- until I last week, saw this particular book by Nunez, recommended on the morning TV show.

I am halfway thru reading it: I am enchanted. It's like taking a canoe ride on a perfectly beautiful lake that has parts and pits of of swirling waters and surprise tributaries.

Smart, thoughtful meditation on writing, mortality, friendship, etc.

Quirky and clever, not generally a reader of fiction, but really enjoyed this short book.

Well-written, light, paean to relationships in all their variety.

I read this for the "An Ugly Cover" part of my 2019 reading challenge. I really enjoyed the writing style of the first chapter of this book, but after that the plot lost me. I didn't like the psychological detours and the ending was unsatisfying.

If I had read the final chapter of this book first, I probably would have given it a much higher rating as the writing is exquisite. Their are moments in this book of astute observation and some of the often unsaid emotions around the grieving process as well as dog ownership. However, it is heavily bogged down, especially in the first half of the book, with descriptions of a writer's process. Unless you are a writer or want to be one, this adds nothing to the book. The woman grieves over a man who is simply not likeable and I couldn't have cared less about his ex-wives or his conquests. The Friend has been marketed as being about a woman's loss and her relationship with her inherited dog and there is simply not enough about the dog or this relationship for far too long.

Could not get through it. Gave up after about 30 pages. So pretentious.

I recommend reading pages131-133 first. Then be a friend to Yourself and read the book aloud.
