At least The Great Southern Novel, may be The Great American Novel. I say this as a southerner steeped in Mr. Faulkner, Flannery O'Connor, Eudora Welty, Harry Crews, Barry Hannah, et al. A history of the south from the end of the Civil War to the Great Depression, through the life of Edgar Watson. And the irony is that it's written by a New Yorker.

It is not a cosy read, and will challenge every reader with the harsh reality of our complicated past. From no other story or history I've read has the oppressive nature and persistence of racism been so effectively, stunningly portrayed. This tale will never leave you.

A great book. Very descriptive language. A great insight into the customs and attitudes of the time period.
