Penelope Fitzgerald is a fascinating writer -- read Hermione Lee's biography to appreciate her amazing life and art. While she was at Cambridge in the 1930's Tolkien was one of her professors. Her uncle worked on the machine that solved the top secret codes of the Germans in World War II and her father was an editor of Punch magazine. She kept her family going through sheer hard work and determination and all her children made it to university. And she also managed to produce fascinating, intelligent, and entertaining written work. Enjoy!
