"A generations-spanning family of psychics--both blessed and burdened by their abilities--must use their powers to save themselves from the CIA, the local mafia, and a skeptic hell-bent on discrediting them in this hilarious, tender, magical novel about the invisible forces that bind us. The Telemachus family is known for performing inexplicable feats on talk shows and late-night television. Teddy, a master conman, heads up a clan who possess gifts he only fakes: there's Maureen, who can astral project; Irene, the human lie detector; Frankie, gifted with telekinesis; and Buddy, the clairvoyant. But when, one night, the magic fails to materialize, the family withdraws to Chicago where they live in shame for years. Until: As they find themselves facing a troika of threats (CIA, mafia, unrelenting skeptic), Matty, grandson of the family patriarch, discovers a bit of the old Telemachus magic in himself. Now, they must put past obstacles behind them and unite like never before. But will it be enough to bring The Amazing Telemachus Family back to its amazing life?"-- Provided by publisher

I loved this book. The combination of quirky family drama/comedy, extra-sensory powers and and inept criminal behavior kept me reading very late at night

I did not finish book; it was a chore to read, so I stopped.

This one moved a little slower than I expected but, in the end, I really enjoyed it. An unexpected twist at the end clinched it!

This one is a slow-burner at the beginning but don't let that fool you. I wasn't sure how I felt about it at first but I soon grew to love the characters and all of their many quirks. Eventually, I found myself constantly picking up the book because I just couldn't wait to see how everything turned out for them. A wonderful book about a very interesting and totally unique family.

Couldn't finish this book. I'm almost 100 pages into the story, but I am finding so many parts of it (most of it) terribly boring. It's a long book, so maybe things will pick up? I hate stopping books when I am past a chapter into them, and I've heard this book is great so I don't really want to give up ... but I am just really not feeling it! Maybe I'll come back to it another day. For now, leaving it at DNF at 77pgs.

Spoonbenders is a twisty treat. Its got mobsters, government secret missions, psychics, time travelers and most of all a loving family dynamic with a ton of crazyness thrown in. I loved the characters in the Telemachus family, each with their own special ability. I had to read this book in several sittings and I couldn't wait to get back to it each time.

I wasn't sure what to think of this one at first. It was a bit strange and seemed to meander... But the voice was excellent and the characters were all engaging. It didn't take long for things to begin to come together -- and then I was hooked!

To me, this novel is, at its heart, above family and the love they have for each other. They may not all be good at showing it, but they all want to be good for each other. Since they're human, we've got issues with self esteem, regrets, resentments, confusion, and all the rest. However, since this is a book about psychics, the powers are thrown into the mix. What is it like for someone who can never be lied to? How about someone that sees the future already mapped out?

As all the family threads come together, it's feels like the magic tricks that pop up in the book -- there's plenty of sleight of hand and engaging exposition that ends with the reader delighted and full of wonder.
