In an ultraconservative America of the not-too-distant future when America has become a police state, the annual marathon is the ultimate sports competition. One hundred boys are selected each year to enter a grueling 450-mile marathon walk. The game is simple: maintain a steady walking pace of four miles per hour without stopping. Three warnings and you're out--permanently. The winner will be awarded whatever he wants for the rest of his life; but a single misstep could be the last.

it inspired all kinds of films including the Hunger Games, like the other one was pulp fiction as R. Bachman.....held back nothing and got very personal...good read

An intense and focused work, grueling in its storyline. It's somewhere between Shirley Jackson's The Lottery and The Hunger Games. But it's very intriguing because, unlike most novels by King and others, it has only one continuous plot. There are no subplots or jumping around in time. It's hard to put down, you get absorbed in the story, as uncomfortable as it is.

Felt the pain with each step the guys took. Just a tad bit to long for me.

The power of the mind is stronger than one's feet. It was a powerful book of endurance from beginning to end.

Thrilling. A beautiful masterpiece from the master himself. First off, I must say this is criminally underrated. This is brilliant and twisted. A disturbing look on the world's future. Ive never been so disturbed sine George Orwell's 1984. This is a must read. Trust me. You'll laugh, cry, scream. Your emotions will be jumping. And the mind blowing twist ending! Just brilliant. This is a flawed book in parts, but is so powerful. Outstanding work by the King of Horror and just about every other genre. Must read. You won't regret it. Disturbing, refreshing and heart pounding. Amazing. Writing is very good to. Beautiful work.

I enjoyed many of his stories but this is the worst one. I always like to finish books no matter how boring it may be....when I finally finished this book (in 1 day) I threw the book down. What a waste of time....................the book was boring and the ending was lame.

This was the first Stephen King book I ever read. I was disappointed by this book, because I had higher hopes for it. Suspenseful in the beginning, but started getting boring towards the end.

"Did you see Olson's...did you see his hair? Before he bought it?"

"What about his hair?" Baker asked.

"It was going gray."

"No, that's crazy," McVries said, but he suddenly sounded very scared. "No, it was dust or something."

"It was gray," Garraty said. "It seems like we've been on this road forever. It was Olson's hair getting...getting that way that made me think of it first, but...maybe this is some crazy kind of immortality."
