A Fugitive Green

Not my type of a read.

I enjoyed most of these stand alone "bulges," as she calls them in her introduction. I loved "Virgins," a true prequel, where a very young Jamie and Ian try to be mercenaries in France. I also enjoyed "A Fugitive Green," where Lord John's older brother Hal meets his very young (and sharp) wife Minnie. When the author says Jamie's in this one, that's pushing it, as he appears in the shop for a few minutes and then disappears from the story! I can't say I liked "A Leaf on the Wind of All Hallows," but it fills in a hole I'd really wondered about. "The Space Between," is very charming when it's dealing with Young Ian's older brother, Marsali's younger sister, and the Lady Hildegard. However, who IS this creepy Comte St. Germain? Maybe when I reread "Dragonfly in Amber," now on hold, he will make sense. Generally, while I'll read everything Galbadon writes, I prefer the Big Enormous Books.

A collection of short stories in the outlander universe.. some are good .. others are not.
I don't think I'm a big Lord John Grey fan. Tales that featured him lost my attention.
and there are 3 of them in this book.. I only read one Lord Grey and Zombies. The other's did not keep me reading.

I generally enjoy Diana Gabaldon’s books enough to overlook her tendency to be inordinately wordy, because her character and plot development are consistently strong. However, this compilation of short stories and novellas left me with a faint pang of regret for my 526-page investment of time. In my opinion, only hardcore Outlander fans will appreciate these side stories, as they are intended to fill in small gaps in the series.

On hold for me; can't wait to read it. And yes, another book in the series would be great! Looking forward to the Starz TV series 3.

A rich collection of seven novellas and short stories by Diana Gabaldon, some of which had been released as stand-alone ebooks, others published in genre anthologies, and two completely new to readers. Though I had read three of these stories previously, I consumed this entire tome in its entirety with relish. I especially enjoyed 'A Fugitive Green,' delighting in the details of how Hal and Minnie became acquainted (Minnie is rather kick-ass for her time!).

Diana is a fabulous writer and a wonderful researcher. It is true that most the the stories in this book were previously published but they were not easy to find. As I have read the Outlander series over and over and often found things I didn't find the first or even third reading, reading a novella again is no hardship.

It should be noted that there are two new stories at the end. A Fugitive Green is about Hal Grey and how he came to marry his second wife. Readers will remember him as the man who sent a wounded Jamie home after the Battle of Culloden. We meet him many times as the books evolve because he is Lord John's brother. The second novella is about Lord John and is set soon after his Zombie experience.

Each of these stories enhances the readers knowledge of supporting/lesser known characters. If one feels the author is just making a money grab and is insulted by this, read something else. I have happily been reading books by Diana Gabaldon since they were first published and will continue to do so.

Minnie Rennie had secrets. Some were for sale and some were strictly her own. She touched the bosom of her dress and glanced toward the lattice-work door at the rear of the shop. Still closed, the blue curtains behind it drawn firmly shut.
