The Harvard-educated comedian, talk-show host, and U.S. Senator chronicles the story of his unlikely senatorial campaign, detailing the ensuing months-long recount and what his service has taught him about America's deeply polarized political culture
"From the #1 bestselling author--a book about an award-winning comedian who decided to run for office and then discovered why award-winning comedians tend not to do that. This is a book about an unlikely campaign that had an even more improbable ending: the closest outcome in history and an unprecedented eight-month recount saga, which is pretty funny in retrospect. It's a book about what happens when the nation's foremost progressive satirist gets a chance to serve in the United States Senate and, defying the low expectations of the pundit class, actually turns out to be good at it. It's a book about our deeply polarized, frequently depressing, occasionally inspiring political culture, written from inside the belly of the beast. In this candid personal memoir, the honorable gentleman from Minnesota takes his army of loyal fans along with him from Saturday Night Live to the campaign trail, inside the halls of Congress, and behind the scenes of some of the most dramatic and/or hilarious moments of his new career in politics. Has Al Franken become a true Giant of the Senate? Franken asks readers to decide for themselves."--Jacket

I agree with a previous reviewer - the SNL section was a bit slow and not as entertaining as the Senate part. Overall though I really enjoyed the book !

Al Franken writes about his life from SNL to campaigning to his time in the U.S. Senate. This book is at times really funny and at times serious - it's an enjoyable and interesting read.

Very enjoyable reading. Franken for president.

There's something a little awkward in the writing about his comedy career, but he really hits his stride when the campaign starts. We desperately need more people in Washington with the attitude he adopts in the book. And it IS really funny. Make sure to read the footnotes!

For me, it was an extraordinary read. Perhaps it had something to do with my Mid West Roots (Wisconsin. circa 1928-1949), yet my admiration for the multi-dimensional levels in the reading gives me a thread of hope, that we do have some dedicated, professional, representatives in Congress with a like agenda.

Franken writes with a balance of what it took for him to gain his seat as a Senator, giving sincere gratitude to his staff and those significant in his achievement. An honest insight in to the political system, and the 'tight rope' walk needed to find a path through politics and keep the balance between political hype and working for his State including the good of the Country. He does his homework! He takes responsibility for his mistakes. He engages those he is at odds with, trying to get the big picture. He contacts the 'lost' part of his constituency, ie. Native Americans in his State. Last, but not least is his ability (sans staff disapproval) to keep his sense of humor, right down to the last sentence. Highly recommended.

The most fun political book I've ever read, at least if you come from my political persuasion. Franken has written his tell-it-like-it-is political memoir in an easy conversational style that makes a quick and enjoyable read. However, it's difficult to read on an old-style Kindle because (1) the footnotes are really important and with an old-style Kindle, the footnotes are in the back and not easy to access, and (2) there are lots of photos. This is no Dreams of My Father, but I highly recommend it anyway.

If you think this will be another book regarding/discussing/explaining anything to do with politics, well you wouldn't be completely wrong, but wait! It's so much more than that. Best written book you will ever read about how someone not extremely rich and well-funded became a US Senator. Not only that, but what it's like, who you have to work with, why you would even do such a crazy endeavor, plus humor.

It's not surprising the author is an amazing senator who is good at his job. He's an amazing author, and humanitarian, and human being who has inspired me to be more than I was before reading this, and I wasn't really a fan previously. Now I feel like I had a good education on all things Minnesota, comedy in the SNL world, the election process, and especially in how to be a good person and do good for other people.

Really enjoyed the journey, to use a reality show term. In this case, it fits.

I loved this book. I especially enjoyed reading about the Senate as an institution - books by other Senators like Sanders and Warren don't divulge into the workings of the Senate as much as Franken does. This book was both hilarious and educational on how the Legislative Branch operates.

He should stick to comedy

I started reading this in a waiting room. I laughed out loud so much I either sold a lot of copies or everyone in the room thought I was crazy. When I read it at home my daughter got out of bed to ask me not to laugh so loud. I think all Minnesotans should read this book to know who Al Franken is and what he stands for. I think even the most stalwart Republican could enjoy this book.
