In the blistering, dry summer, the waters of Thornfield Reservior have been depleted, revealing the ruins of the small Yorkshire village that lay at its bottom, bringing with it the unidentified bones of a brutally murdered young woman. Detective Chief Inspector Banks faces a daunting challenge: he must unmask a killer who has escaped detection for half a century. Because the dark secret of Hobb's End continue to haunt the dedicated policeman even though the town that bred then has died--and long after its former residents have been scattered to far places...or themselves to the grave. From an acknowledged master writing at the peak of his storytelling powers comes a powerful, insightful, evocative, and searingly suspenseful novel of past crimes and present evil.

One of Robinson''s best, I think.

Very well done as the author switches two story lines from two different time periods. This is a complex police procedural where Banks (along with his sort of new girlfriend, a local D.I. Annie Banks) solve a violent murder 50 years past, trying to identify the victim "in a place that no longer exists, whose former residents are scattered to the winds...". To solve this many layered mystery, the story takes Banks back and forth from the past (rural English life in W.W. II) to the present (the small hamlet of Yorkshire).
It is a many layered mystery with a very interesting plot. Recommended.

Excellently done. Two stories from different time periods intertwined. One of the best I've read by Robinson so far.

Robinson tells about a love story in the present and a love story during WWII, describing how people in a small British town reacted to having American servicemen nearby. I thought I knew who was guilty of the murder, but I was wrong. The characters are real and believable, and the plot is well done. He knows how to tell an interesting story.

This is the first book I read in this series and am I glad I did. I can honestly say that I've enjoyed all his books but this one remains my favorite.

Enjoyed the weaving of the story between events of the past and uncovering the truth.

Hobb''s end was flooded to build a resevoir just after World War II. A drought has now drained the area and the deserted village has reappeared. Along with a body. Told in flashbacks, the mystery hinges on what information Alan Banks will uncover to solve it.
