For me (and I came from communist site) it is a lesson given by Spiellberg how important is to be decent - no matter what arguments are against
there is why in Poland Solidarity was born and why decent people oppose what is going on now
there were decent people on both sites: communist regime and democratic opposition, there is why the walls fell down later in 1989
on the other site - we see Donovan, who understood that principle long time ago

Pretty reasonable portrayal of the Cold War and some of the things as well as mentality that went on.

Rated 8/10. I thought this was a pretty decent story of the Powers U-2 incident, and subsequent trade with a Soviet spy.

Good acting all around.

Recommended.

OK spy film but I have been tired of Tom Hanks "golly shucks" acting style for a long time >> He plays Tom Hanks not the character >> Better to watch Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy over and over than this . But its still an interesting film with good location and cold war setting ~ 420

Highly engrossing movie despite its length. Great ensemble cast by Spielberg.
Middle aged protagonist one of few people to think ahead given his insurance training. Sure protagonist did a Perry Mason in that client only got 30 years instead of death penalty.
Film captured the cold war paranoia, shades of grey & backdoor realpolitik to save mutual face.
Soviet don't want to admit having spy use client state proxy.
US wanted Gary Powers back after disastrous U-2 mission.
Interesting meeting with the Soviet envoy & the meddling "look at me! I suffering!" Eastern German official who tried to make their own offer.
Lots of posturing, bluffing & delaying during machine-gunning Berlin Wall construction.
Protagonist explaining to East German to cut it out or his superior have to tell Soviet why deal is off classic.

Fantastic movie. I have watched this twice. Outstanding acting by Tom Hanks, as the lawyer, James Donovan and Mark Rylance, as Rudolf Abel. Based on a true story that took place during the time of the Cold War. Rudolf Able was convicted of espionage in 1957. Due to the skill of Donovan, his lawyer, he escaped the death penalty. He was sentenced to 30 years in prison. Frances Gary Powers was flying a U2 spy plane that was brought down over the Soviet Union in 1960. A prisoner exchange was negotiated by James Donovan.

Outstanding cinema. Spielberg at his best. Hanks at his best. It's a movie where you feel the characters are real people. Not to miss.

A very good movie. Tom Hanks gives his usual stellar performance. Interesting that it is based on a true story.

Wolfgang Vogel played by Sebastian Koch: Every accident, properly viewed, is an opportunity.

Judge: Wow. That sounds like spinning what-ifs. You could do that till the cows come home.
Donovan: It's my business, what-ifs. I'm in insurance. And there's nothing implausible about this one. It's entirely in the realm of what could happen. It's the kind of probability that people buy insurance for. If we send this guy to his death, we leave ourselves wide open. No policy in our back pocket for the day the storm comes.
Judge: Nice speech.
Donovan: Sir, there is also the humanitarian argument. Should he die for doing the job they sent him to do?
===
Donovan: You don't seem alarmed.
Abel: Would it help?
===
Donovan: Do you never worry?
Abel: Would it help?
===
Abel: Well, the boss isn't always right but he's always the boss.

Donovan: Yick Wo v. Hopkins. The court held that even aliens, in that case Chinese immigrants, could not be held to answer for a crime without due process of law, including any alien that entered the country illegally.
Judge: The Department of Justice has its first allegiance to the United States. I don't see how an alien, if he's here illegally, how he suffered deprivation of rights. Rights as what? An American? Rights as what, Counselor? We're in a battle for civilization. This Russian spy came here to threaten our way of life. Now, I have a courtroom of people waiting. Get out there, sit beside the Russian. Let's get this over and done with. And your motion is denied.

Donovan: I know this man. If the charge is true, he serves a foreign power but he serves it faithfully. If he is a soldier in the opposing army, he is a good soldier. He has not fled the field of battle to save himself. Donovan: He has refused to serve his captor. He has refused to betray his cause. He has refused to take the coward's way out. The coward must abandon his dignity before he abandons the field of battle. That, Rudolf Abel will never do. Shouldn't we, by giving him the full benefit of the rights that define our system of government, show this man who we are? Who we are. Is that not the greatest weapon we have in this Cold War? Will we stand by our cause less resolutely than he stands by his?
