Stefan Zweig was particularly drawn to the novella, and Confusion, a rigorous and yet transporting dramatization of the conflict between the heart and the mind, is among his supreme achievements in the form.

A nuanced and psychologically astute story of an esteemed professor and the student whom he takes under his wing. Zweig's life and writings were one of the inspirations for "The Grand Budapest Hotel." Zweig and his wife fled Europe after the rise of the Nazis, spent some time in England and America, and settled in Brazil, where he and his wife killed themselves in 1942.
