Julia's life is comfortable, if unremarkable, until her sister's brutal murder opens old wounds. Julia is a staid, middle-class, London mum. Then her younger sister is murdered. Searching for answers seems to unleash the old, wild, Julia, and suddenly her future and her life are in jeopardy.

Do not waste your time on this trashy novel. The protagonist is unlikeable and makes irritatingly stupid choices. There is no proper resolution at the end of the novel; it's like the author couldn't come up with an ending that he liked, so he just didn't bother to write an ending at all. The author's first book, "Before I Go to Sleep" is much better. Go read that one, instead.

SECOND LIFE has a dark and twisty plot involving addiction, obsession and the dangers of online sex chat rooms. While I still found it to be a page-turner, it was not of the calibre of Watson's debut novel, BEFORE I GO TO SLEEP. I had no empathy or liking for the main character, Julia, & the ending was disappointing.... still an okay thriller.

Lacks the brilliant pacing of Watson's first, BEFORE I GO TO SLEEP, which unfortunately makes the first half a fairly pedestrian thriller. When the plot and the pace pick up, though, it's a worthy read, with the events made even more interesting by the reader's apathy for the main character, Julia. Watson is still very much an author to keep an eye on.
