Director Robert Z. Leonard in 1940 could not have picked a better cast for "Pride and Prejudice. For this adaption of the Jane Austen novel, Laurence Olivier was picked to play Mr. Darcy and Greer Garson was selected as Elizabeth Bennet. Both capture the characters from the novel perfectly. The narrative of the movie though very good, is not the same as the novel. Still outstanding cinematography by Karl Freund and art direction by Cedric Gibbons made for a glamorous looking film. The famed British Author Aldous Huxley wrote the screenplay, which would be one of the few times he would work in the film medium. Although many "Pride and Prejudice" movies for theaters and television have come and gone, done matches the original with Olivier and Garson. The two captured their characters and brought them to life. They will be remembered as the Mr. Darcy and the Elizabeth Bennet. Enjoy a wonderful classic movie that for generations has be loved by all!

Definitely not the best version ever.

My mother's favorite movie, and no wonder. Impeccably cast with luminous performances by Greer Garson, Laurence Olivier, and others. Full of charm, grace, and humor ... not entirely faithful to Jane Austen, but no matter -- it fully captures the spirit of the book.

While it has some flaws that reflect the state of the art of movies from its day, like too many reaction shots, but it is not really dated as it is just a question of style. Olivier is a perfect Darcy and is well matched by Greer Garson, and all of the more exaggerated roles such as Mr Collins or Mrs Bennet or Lady C de Burgh are wonderful to watch played by all those old studio pros. It's fine film making in the grand old MGM style, although I think they should have gone for color.

Fun, classic Hollywood, but notoriously untrue to Austen, from the costumes on down. Some of the "improvements" were made by Aldous Huxley, but still. Olivier is near my idea of Darcy, for what that's worth.
