Autism is usually portrayed as a checklist of deficits, including difficulties interacting socially, problems in communicating, sensory challenges, and repetitive behavior patterns. This perspective leads to therapies focused on ridding individuals of "autistic" symptoms. Now Dr. Barry M. Prizant, an internationally renowned autism expert, offers a new and compelling paradigm: the most successful approaches to autism don't aim at fixing a person by eliminating symptoms, but rather seeking to understand the individual's experience and what underlies the behavior

Add a CommentOne of the best books I've read about autistic children. The author is compassionate and respectful, treating autistics as whole human beings whose autism is just normal human behaviour taken to extremes..."Autism isn't an illness. It's a different way of being human..." His focus is on the "why," looking for the underlying stressors and then looking for ways to communicate and help. Forget about a 'cure.' Let's learn tolerance, understanding, and appreciation for the beauty of diversity!
What a wonderful book! "Uniquely Human" is written by a speech therapist who helps children with autism. Prizant uses anecdotes from his decades of experience to reveal how the "strange behaviors" of children with autism are often creative and even desperate attempts to communicate. This book provides a hopeful and encouraging perspective for parents and families of children with autism.
