"Seventh novel in the Martin Beck mystery series," together known as "The story of crime." "The gruesome murder of a police captain in his hospital room reveals the unsavory history of a man who spent forty years practicing a horrible blend of strongarm police work and sheer brutality. Martin Beck and his colleagues feverishly comb Stockholm for the murderer, a demented and deadly rifleman, who has plans for even more chaos. As the tension builds and a feeling of imminent danger grips Bec, his investigation unearths evidence of police corruption."

The Abominal Man was the seventh crime novel of ten that the married couple of Maj Sjowall and Per Wahloo wrote from 1965 to 1975. After doing research together, the couple would then separately write alternate chapters. All the novels centered around the detective Martin Beck. While the characters of the novels were located in Sweden, the fourth novel, The Laughing Policeman, was adapted to a Walter Mathau film with the main character a police detective in San Francisco (which I gave a 4 of 5 star rating in 2014). The style of this book and the film of The Laughing Policeman both follow the lives of the characters (witnesses and detectives) as much as they do the plot.

The authors of this series were touted as being the vanguard of the current crop of Swedish crime writers.

While that might be true, this book lacks a sense of suspense. It's pretty clear early in the book who is responsible. The twists and layers of modern crime fiction are entirely absent here.

The authors are more interested in what goes on in the heads of the main police characters and in writing detailed descriptions of every room someone walks into.
