"Drawing on her years as a campaigner and commentator on women's issues in the Middle East, [Eltahawy] explains that since the Arab Spring began, women in the Arab world have had two revolutions to undertake: one fought with men against oppressive regimes, and another fought against an entire political and economic system that treats women in countries from Yemen and Saudi Arabia to Egypt, Tunisia, and Libya as second-class citizens ... Her book is a plea for outrage and action on their behalf, confronting the 'toxic mix of culture and religion that few seem willing or able to disentangle lest they blaspheme or offend'" -- Provided by publisher

Awesome book that opened my eyes to the reality a woman must deal with when you live with cultural misogyny. I changed and started to realize things are still in the dark ages for women in the Arab world: what will we in Canada do to make Saudi Arabia accountable for the inequities.

Imagine, you are kidnapped, raped, beaten, burned and then you escape. Your rapist, kidnapper, and torturer is arrested and given a lengthy prison sentence. Its done, right? WRONG! In this middle eastern country a kidnapper, rapist and torturer can get out of jail if the victim MARRIES HER ATTACKER. Never happen you say. It does happen. The attackers family put pressure on her, so too does her own family. The rapists family keeps their vicious son out of prison, her family gets to restore the family's honour after HER SHAME. This and a lot more. This book is written by an Egyptian muslim women who started to question WHY? A September 2014 article in the Jordan Times estimated that as many as 95 percent of the rape cases in Jordan are resolved with the survivors marrying their rapists.

A highly opinionated rant. Journalistic writing.
