This sort of nonsensical children's fiction can also be found in Carroll's Alice In Wonderland, Blyton's Faraway Tree trilogy and Lofting's Doctor Dolittle novels. The individual chapters in these 4 books combined are not really connected plot-wise so most could be read out of sequence and, in fact, the 4th book is really just extra chapters. Travers apparently wrote another 4 books in the series after these, which already seem pretty self-derivative. The Mary Poppins character in the books is often more cross than is warranted and primly refuses to acknowledge the extraordinary events she's just participated in. She also literally just leaves when the wind changes, unlike Nanny McPhee (based on Brand's Nurse Matilda books) who leaves once no longer needed. For these reasons, I prefer the Disney film adaptation. Saving Mr Banks, about the making of that film, is also good but intended for an older audience.
