The author recounts in graphic novel format her experiences with hearing loss at a young age, including using a bulky hearing aid, learning how to lip read, and determining her "superpower."
"Going to school and making new friends can be tough. But going to school and making new friends while wearing a bulky hearing aid strapped to your chest? That requires superpowers! In this funny, poignant graphic novel memoir, author/illustrator Cece Bell chronicles her hearing loss at a young age and her subsequent experiences with the Phonic Ear, a very powerful--and very awkward--hearing aid. The Phonic Ear gives Cece the ability to hear--sometimes things she shouldn't--but also isolates her from her classmates. She really just wants to fit in and find a true friend, someone who appreciates her as she is. After some trouble, she is finally able to harness the power of the Phonic Ear and become "El Deafo, Listener for All." And more importantly, declare a place for herself in the world and find the friend she's longed for"-- from publisher's web site

My 7 1/2 year old son read this book on his own and loved it. He re-read it again the day after he finished it.

My almost 10-year-old daughter and I read this novel for a Mother/Daughter (Tween) book club and it did not disappoint. It was a great book that both of us enjoyed. Having it be a graphic novel helped with illustrating the various situations that she encountered. Coming-of-age story and great perspective from a child who is deaf and what this felt like from CeCe's point of view. It was great to find out that this was based upon the experiences of the author. You may want to read this book more than once. Recommend.

What a fun book! I can see this book being read to preschoolers or kindergartners to give them some insight about people in the deaf community. Definitely recommend!

I'm so grateful that books like this—books that bring us new voices, books that teach empathy—exist. Read it with your kids or by yourself. It's well worth the time and you're sure to find some relatable bit of childhood in these pages.

I am a 6 year old who read this book. I really liked it. The girl Cece was a very nice person! The moral of the book is "Do not be shy, be courageous".
I recommend this book for ages 6 and higher.
