I don't know when, but somewhere along the way John Dos Passos dropped from major American novelist status to neglected, minor writer who wrote one huge book. It's a little unfair, as he was one of the more adventurous writers of his times and at his best he fuses the social commentary novel of Sinclair Lewis with the more radical experiments of writers like Joyce and Eliot. "Manhattan Transfer," which offers a polyphonic, panoramic view of NYC plays out like a dry run for this masterpiece, the massive trilogy "U.S.A." A writer worth rediscovering. His war novel, "Three Soldiers," is also good.
