Good book. I liked the atmosphere of the setting.

Lovely, atmospheric, and quite sad, "Hotel du Lac" tells the story of a woman who takes a short holiday in Switzerland, where she observes the lives of a particular subset of the old-money rich and famous. (This would pair well with a book like "My Mrs. Brown" or "Excellent Women.")

Originally this title was published in 1984, but even taking that date into consideration, I found this book to be quite out of touch in terms of human behavior, and relationships. It seemed sort of gothic without being gothic. Ultimately I was dissatisfied with it all. It seemed slightly ridiculous to me how certain of the characters behaved. Their actions and beliefs made them less believable as 'real' people.

A beautifully written story that I picked up at the wrong time and place. Despite its allure, I simply found too many other fun, exciting, and otherwise entertaining stories I wanted to read. I was not in the right mind space to focus on moody, wealthy, spoiled characters that had nothing better to do but harm each other’s hearts. Give me action and adventure instead, please. Thank you. Read the first three chapters and then the last three pages. Satisfied.

When I read Hotel Du Lac many years ago, I had been through a very sad experience (love lost). The character in this book gave me great comfort in her ability to be independent and choosing to be single and not with a partner. I loved this book so much that I went to Switzerland and stayed at the Hotel Du Lac. It was, for me, exactly how Anita Brookner had described it in her book. I felt how serene it was. It was a beautiful experience.
