The best movie I've seen in a long time, I've put it on hold again so my wife can see it, she was not able to catch it the first time.... besides the historical account of Jews and Arabs in conflict, and the post-WW2 events leading to Palestine-becoming-Israel, the personal story of the English family at the centre of the story is heart-rending and heart-warming at the same time. My grandfather served in the '30s in Palestine during the British Mandate as RSM with the Seaforths, when the Brits were committed to the Balfour Declaration and the establishment of a Jewish nation in Palestine, and so it had great relevance for me. I don't personally think the issues are quite so complex and ambiguous as portrayed in the movie, for example it underplays the role the 5 Arab nations who invaded Israel in 1948 had in the Palestinians leaving their homes, instead blaming their evacuation on Jewish violence, but this does not undermine the story of Erin's grandfather's heroism and loyalty to his Palestinian friends, and vice versa...... what a great movie....

Everyone should see this video to get perspectives on the complex issues in Israel that go back to WW II and beyond that. It will show you that it is not black & white. How to untangle the issues is not clear and Americans need to know the conundrum that continues to challenge the puzzle solvers.

An excellent series that starkly looks at the situation in Palestine both before the Partition by the UN and in present times. It is a journey from view point of a young English girl going to Israel with her Jewish friend while carrying a diary of her grandfather with flashbacks to his time as a British soldier in Palestine trying to maintain order and peace prior to the British abandoning the mandate. .I liked it so much, I bought a copy for my own library of DVDs.

Easily in my top ten (maybe five) mini series ever. A story that is told from the diary of a British teen. This really made me aware and want to read more about the role Britain played as a peacekeeping force post WWII.
If you like this then check out further work by Peter Kosminsky has done. He is one of Britain's finest directors in my opinion.
