It is 1866, and Walter Moody has come to make his fortune upon the New Zealand goldfields. On the stormy night of his arrival, he stumbles across a tense gathering of twelve local men, who have met in secret to discuss a series of unsolved crimes. Moody is soon drawn into the mystery: a network of fates and fortunes that is as complex and exquisitely patterned as the night sky.

The Man Booker judges described this book as a "Kiwi Twin Peaks". I couldn't agree more.

Late in commenting, I read this book last year. I loved it. I was enthralled from the first chapter. What an appropriate title. How well it related to the frontier town and its "leading citizens", their characters, their greed, and their pretensions.

This is a sprawling, complex, difficult story with lots of characters. Listening to it makes it somewhat easier to digest. Mark Meadows does a great job bringing out the different characters, with their accents, and keeps up the energy and pacing so listeners are never bored. Don't give up on this one, it truly deserves its accolades.
