Built in the 1960s, Cidade de Deus (City of God) is a sprawling housing project built to keep the poor as far as possible from Rio's glamorous beaches and resorts. By the 1980s, it has degenerated into a war zone so dangerous that visitors from outside risk being shot to death on sight, a poisonous stew of poverty, drugs, and crime. "If you run away, they get you, and if you stay, they get you, too," says Rocket, who wants to be a photographer. Rocket's brother, friends, and neighbors begin with truck stick-ups, which lead to brothel hold-ups that lead to murder that leads to coke dealing that leads to street brawls with armies of gun-toting 11-year-olds. Soon a full-scale gang war rages in the City of God--understandably not covered by wary Rio photojournalists--but just the opportunity Rocket needs to make his move, get a job at a newspaper, and get out

The first time I watched City of God, I was blown away by it. Having watched it again recently, years after that first viewing, I mainly felt saddened by all of the violence. It is incredibly violent, rivaling the number of killings I've seen in any film. Still, its stories are told creatively and very well. Also, the acting is excellent. As is my critique with many movies, I thought it should have been shorter. If you tend to like Quentin Tarantino's films and can handle subtitles or speak Portuguese, you will probably like this film. I have not read the adult fiction book of the same title on which it was based. City of God is rated R for strong brutal violence, sexuality, drug content and language.

I normally don't like violent movie., but this one really grip me. Very well made, it is a good reflection on our world of hatred, not just about the slum of Rio.

Very interesting view into violent growing up in Rio slums - so many children waving so many guns.

Fascinating story. What a contrast to the imagery of happy Rio slums, provided in a film like Black Orpheus. This extremely violent coming of age story is set in a near hopeless slum environment, including continual police corruption. Of course it is disturbing to watch images of pre-adolescent children doing hold-ups, running drugs, and murdering other children as a test prior to joining a drug gang. Many depictions of prostitution, sex, and all forms of violence, including a man beating his wife to death--perhaps the grimmest part of the film. Extreme swearing. Despite all that, the film flips between the serious, scenes of pathos, and the comedic, including a brilliant high-energy opening sequence with an escaped chicken.

Completely inappropriate for children. This is a movie where the R rating should be taken seriously .

Not recommended.Senseless murders by the children of the said false environment of which they live.Victims themselves of a sick society ruled by the god of this world of his minions...

There is no question this is a well made film about life in the slum outside of Rio de Janeiro, and about children with guns being led toward a life in crime. The timing was the 60's and 70's, a time period when we heard about children being shot and killed by the Brazilian police. This is a film with much violence, shooting and killing. The cast of both young adult child actors did an excellent job. However, I find the frequent use of a hand-held camera and fast panning to be annoying.

I am a sucker for a coming of age ganster tale. This is a pretty good foreign one. Slips between past and present. Gritty and realistic. Edgy and fun. Shot well. Violent.

Best gangster/hood film I ever seen. It makes Shottas look like an ametuer film!

Violence: Plenty of shooting and killing, sometime by children. A couple of very brief moments of nudity too.
