Does "adult western" mean it's kinda boring? This 1950 western that does try to bring more depth and maturity to the genre with mixed results. Gregory Peck plays a notorious gunfighter who has grown weary of punks in every town challenging him. After he shoots one in a bar, he tries to hang up his guns, but the man's brothers aren't going to let him. Peck is good, if stoical, in the lead and it is an admirable attempt to be more complex than the average western, but it's also pretty slow. Karl Malden plays a gregarious bartender. Directed by Henry King, who worked with Peck several times, including on the WW2 film "12 'O Clock High." Apparently John Wayne wanted to play the lead and was bummed he didn't. The Jimmy Stewar/Anthony Mann films are a better example of "adult" westerns.
