Destin Daniel Cretton extended his original short (which is included in Special Features) into this full length feature about troubled & abused young adults living in a group home where they receive psychological counselling for up to a year (hence the short term-12). Brie Larson showed off her acting chops early in her career in this indie film. The story portrays kids with serious issues being supervised by Larson and Gallagher, who clearly have some unresolved issues of their own. Rami Malek, (Mr. Robot) plays a new counselor trainee, but isn't given much to do.

Very good movie. Passionate, violent and very sad. So many of our children need help and support even after the age of 18. Our system is seriously lacking when it is assumed that a young person can live in a controlled environment until the age of 18 and then they are completely on their own. "Free"? Far from being free, they are lost. More should be done. This is a heartbreaking situation.

Having worked with "at risk" kids in group homes, I'd have to say this was a pretty solid representation of the real thing. Although this didn't have nearly as much violence, fighting, threats to staff and other kids, swearing, destruction of property, self injury, substance abuse, etc, as the real thing, but it certainly invoked the general sense these kids have of not fitting in, not being normal, not being loved and cared for, etc, and the heightened emotional volatility that comes from their often overwhelming feelings of lack, grief, loss and rage because of that. It also showed the Herculean steadfastness, empathy, and completely openhearted and constant availability and awareness required of the staff - if they are any good at what they do. And yes, staff often come from difficult backgrounds themselves, wanting to help kids going through the same thing, which can bring up triggers for the staff as well. It's just too bad these kids get punted out of group homes when they are only 18, as most of them need support - and should be supported, just like our own kids - for several years after that.

This is my kind of movie; the best I've seen in quite some time. The story was wonderful, filled with heartache and hope. The characters were wonderfully drawn and developed nicely. The setting was perfectly imagined. The plot had some wonderful tension, but not at the risk of losing heart. I really, really liked this film. I'd watch it again; and I'm not one to rewatch films very often.

Okay movie with a good heart. Not extremely exciting but good subject matter.

Add some biting, bed wetting and more vomiting and this would be realistic.

Starts off with such an overdose of insufferably clever repartee that the DVD ejected itself after 5 minutes. Months later I watched the whole thing, and I now admit it had something to say.

There was so much profanity in the first 15-20 minutes of the movie that I turned it off and returned it to the library. The story probably would have been good enough without adding the profanity, I will never know. I would not recommend this movie.
