There's plenty of community, love, and family to go around in this intelligent and heartwarming book. We listened to "Sugar" as a family during a recent road trip and loved it. The narration is outstanding. In addition to creating a vibrant, dynamic heroine who continues to learn and grow throughout the story, the author opened our eyes to plantation life for newly-freed African-Americans and caused us to imagine what it was like for the first Chinese laborers who were brought in to shore up the labor gap.
