Luc Ferry did an excellent job writing this book. He illustrates background settings, principles, and the philosopher's character's very well. Also, he covers and explains some of the most history-shaping principles in an easy to understand (and also makes it easy to see their mark for ourselves) way. My favorite thing about this book was probably that he covered so much and didn't devote too much attention to one topic (though I could've handled a little less on Nietzsche). He was relatively unbiased in his explanations and didn't just criticize a certain manner of thinking without also giving positive reasons to support it. I feel much more educated in the history of philosophy after reading this book, and I plan on rereading in the future.

As for age rating, I don't really believe there is one. If someone is too "young" for it, they're simply going to find it highly boring. I'm 13, and I loved this book. Yet reading a few pages to my 43 year old father bored him. I have a love of wisdom (literally, "philosophia") myself and I'm sure that fueled my appreciation. There are larger vocabulary words, but I think it's probably around a high school level and personally I had very little trouble.

Excellent, thought-provoking book. It has changed the way I think about this world and my life. I actually plan on buying my own copy, so I can re-read and mark it up!
