Undertaking the adaptation of Tolkien's best-known work was an enormous task, but with its first broadcast on BBC Radio 4 on 8 March 1981 this magical dramatization became an instant classic. Ian Holm stars as Frodo, Michael Hordern as Gandalf, and Robert Stephens as Aragorn in J.R.R. Tolkien's fantastic tale of Middle Earth.

Without a doubt the best dramatization of "The Lord of the Rings" ever done; the script and the performances just leave Peter Jackson's movies in the dust.

Sir Ian Holm, who plays Bilbo Baggins in the Jackson LotR, plays Frodo in the radio edition, and delivers the goods brilliantly. This radio edition of the story also boasts the definitive portrayals of Gandalf (by Sir Michael Hordern), Samwise Gamgee (Bill Nighy), and Gollum (Peter Woodthorpe).

The scripts were mainly written by Brian Sibley, who also dramatized C.S. Lewis's "The Chronicles of Narnia" for BBC Radio.

This set isn't even 14 hours long, so if your looking to listen to the full books, this isnt it at all.

This BBC Radio production of the LotR is not too bad, but the books themselves are so much better than this radio production was.
