An interesting combination of noir and magic realism. It works for me but won't for everyone. Start with Claire DeWitt and the City of the Dead.

Book 2 in the Claire DeWitt series

I wanted to like it more. The detective is quirky. I like her unconventional methods and especially the references to her mentor Silette "But Silettians don't worry about justice. That's for the courts and judges. Silettians worry about one thing only, and that's the truth." And on a book falling off the shelf, "Above all, inner knowing...trumps every piece..,evidence, clue, rational assumption. If we do not put it first....there is no point in carrying on, in detection or in life.". Add to this method of finding the murderer unhealthy drug use and voila! Mystery solved albeit via an unruly, unexpected, enjoyable way.

One of the most obnoxious, self-serving protagonists ever, and yet I can't put the story down. I look forward to the next one.

If you're looking for a refreshing mystery try this - she isn't the typical detective, but she is... shall we say... Sherlockian? Well written and somewhat silly, Claire deWitt is a force to be reckoned with.

I didn't enjoy this one as much as the first in the series - until the very end.
