"See the life I've had can make a good man bad."
The Smiths, in their brief and furious reign, were the rare band whose compilations (like a lot of British bands they released a lot of singles and did BBC sessions), notably "Hatful of Hollow" and "Louder than Bombs," were as essential as their studio albums. I don't know what more you need to say about an album that begins with "William, It was Really Nothing," ends with "Please, Please, Please Let Me Get What I Want," and, along the way, includes "How Soon is Now?," "This Charming Man," and "Reel Around the Fountain," in a version I prefer to the the one on their debut, which also came out in 1984.
"I am human and I need to be loved."
