In the late 1990s, twelve Afro Latina women, originally from La Concepcion, a small village in northern Ecuador, migrated with their children to the city of Quito. Lured by the prospect of prosperity, they instead encountered indifference and hostility. To be Black, Latina, and single female in Quito meant ostracism. Because of racial discrimination, it was impossible for these women to find a place to live. Refusing to idly accept their fates or return to La Concepcion, the women undertook the grueling task of building their own homes. While their babies played in the nearby dirt, these women endured back-breaking labor -- from digging ditches to hauling heavy materials -- to achieve their goal. Africa mia is a compelling testament to a handful of outcast women committed to live independently -- women determined not only to survive, but to create a community for themselves, and more importantly, to guarantee the livelihood of their children
