In the early hours of Good Friday, 14 April 1922, anti-Treaty members of the IRA occupied the Four Courts in Dublin. This was an open challenge to the authority of the Provisional Government and, on the morning of 28 June, the new National Army starred to shell the building. These were the first shots fired in the Irish Civil War.
