I adore this book so much that I bought a copy for my family. We re-read it regularly whenever one of us needs a lift and a smile. SO good! You should read it! Unless you have no imagination and frown upon talking animals, in which case look for something else :)
This is a wonderful read for a second or third grader. Easy to read.
Even though it was an easy read I loved loved reading it! My favorite book of all time! In all of Patricia Maclachlan
Books there is always a message and and an easy moral to find. Very inspiring from everyone in the family.
I really loved that the family decided after the dad left to adopt 4 dogs and 1 cat! I really great book that makes you laugh and feel good!!!
REALLY GOOD!!! i devoured this easy to read book. loved the characters and the animals. each came off the page so alive and vibrant. what a pleasant surprise. excellent book for adults and teens and younger ones too...(ugly cover but please dont judge it by that!)
Short and easy enough for a third-grader to read alone, yet filled with the complex aspects of complete human beings and their relationships. It's Patricia MacLachlan, after all, and she doesn't disappoint. Yes, it has magic enough for a kind of humble, homey excitement. And charm enough for an adult reader. But it's not a general readaloud since it deals with the temporary dissolution of a nuclear family. Uncommonly, all's well that ends well (Dad only left to try his hand at writing; he "forgot" for awhile how important his family was.), so take your chances on the young person you may hand it to. MacLachlan's own magic is pervasive. This book glows with warmth and love.
