Serviceable entry into the "Western Down Under" genre, elevated by the quality of the two leads and some nice scenery, but little else.

The classic "man vs man vs situation" contest, the New Zealand influences manage to give it a bit of a different edge. The plot, and even ending, are predictable (with some creative twists), but the feel is easier than Hollywood would do. Fairly slow-paced, if you are looking for a thriller, but a decent evening's watch if you are willing to have something more intelligent.

I highly recommend this film. I found it exciting and well-acted. One of the best films I have seen for a long time. However, I am the kind of person who does not generally like violent films or films with a lot of action. This film did have violence and action, but not enough to make me uncomfortable. It was the kind of violence and action that was suitable to the plot, and not done for the sake of violence or action. The ending was great!

Despite its scenic New Zealand backdrops, I found this old-fashioned action film weak and draggy, owing largely to its predictable plot and hackneyed treatment of the familiar noble-savage-versus-brutal-racist-colonizer theme. A further disappointment was that the screenplay confines Ray Winstone to a quiet, static role, in contrast to the more fiery characters he excels at portraying. (But, talented actor that he is, Winstone still manages to compensate slightly by pulling off a credible Afrikaans accent consistently throughout the film.)
