I gave it a shot because some of the reviews were good, but mostly because I was interested in seeing the wonderful Malcolm Sinclair in a supporting role. I can't say I liked any of these episodes. Granted, these shows are well dated, about 25 years old, so some of the implausibility can be forgiven. Something that really turned my stomach was the episode where a man who murdered a woman was shown sympathy. You see he only murdered her because she made noise as he tried to rape her. Awe, bless. He didn't mean to kill her, it's just that he didn't want to be found out for being a rapist. Oh, heck, let's let him out of prison shall we? Yes, I get that it's fiction, but clearly the scriptwriters needed a course in gender equality. I'm glad to say things in the UK have moved on a bit in terms of treating women with respect, but not as much as one would wish. By a long shot.

I can't recommend the series. Malcolm Sinclair notwithstanding.

A bit slow at first but as it continued, I began to enjoy it. The characters are lovable and the Pie restaurant setting is quite homely and comfortable.
The mysteries are interesting and the detective is quite smart.

I enjoy the subtle, Brit wit. Some good one-liners in a gentle setting. Griffiths is very good in all his roles, very diverse. Some episodes were better than others - as in believable or ridiculous.

Thoroughly enjoyed all seasons of this series. The more we watched, the more we enjoyed it. Agree with southpawsme, it grew on us too. Interesting characters we came to know and appreciated their development. We found plot lines intriguing, sometimes whimsical, others more social issues. Good mysteries but not gruesome. Highly recommend; very good watch, well worth the time.

We have found this program to grow on us & enjoyed it. Different from US detective stories & such a twist is that his dream being quite different from the job that he does quite well.

When a first rate UK actor reaches a certain age, and has not become an international star, detective programs come to the rescue. This time, the star is the great Richard Griffiths, punching way below his weight, and sometimes showing it, as a cop turned chef. Pie In the Sky is a bizarre mix of realism and whimsey, socialism and snobbery, with even a touch of supervillainy. That is to say, it is very English. An ideal show to play Hey! It's That Guy, with the past and future guest stars.

SDH & closed-caption review
[1 = poor; 2 = fair; 3 = good, 4 = excellent].

I gave this a 1-2 rating for readability for the sub-titles; there are no cc’s available.
The sub-titles are very small; lower-case; are white letters with fuzzy edges and are not superimposed over a black horizontal bar. When the tv show images are light-valued (e.g. light clothing, landscape, cityscapes, room interiors) the words are barely readable.

I like the idea of an eccentric cop on the edge of retirement running a cafe but watching it makes me hungry.
