I have to say that the ending took me by surprise. The film gives new meaning to being overprotective. Jeez.

Under its "foreign film" trappings, Mother is a familiar film that Hollywood doesn't make any more: the domestic film noir, where a woman will do anything to save a loved one (Max Ophuls's The Reckless Moment would be interesting to watch with this one). What may be confusing viewers, besides the usual cultural differences, is that the mother is not a perfect person, and there is nothing like a happy ending -- or is there? You must decide. If Hye-ja Kim, in the title role, didn't win all the Oscars the year Mother came out, she should have.

This is a 2009 South Korean drama directed by Bong Joon-ho.
The performances of the actors appear so amateurish that I quit viewing halfway through.

Slowly builds into a very in depth story of a protective mother and her son. Characters are far more complex in the end .

I didn’t enjoy this movie as much as others. I thought it was pretty good. The story was interesting enough but then it gets a little too crazy and loses some of its credibility. Overall a decent foreign film, just nothing great.

This movie gives new meaning to an over protective mother. A really good thriller with unexpected ending.

Horror film. A skilled Asian acupuncturist does not have a license to practice, but that is the least of her problems that includes an overly sensitive son accused of murdering a young girl, and a society filled with a few dysfunctional families and abuse of some of the peasants. This is a real horror--it starts out as a horror that increases in horror including a murder that is never solved for certainty. Well acted, nice scenery, great script.

Keep watching through the oddly meandering first half as complications and twists eventually transform director Joon-ho Bong's first film into an unexpectedly original whodunit which provokes moral questions concerning justice, social bias, motive, intent, and memory. Science fiction fans should see director Bong's darkly-polished fantasy "Snowpiercer" (2013) set in a dystopian future earth.

Mrs. Yoon is a soft-spoken herbalist barely managing to support herself and her mentally challenged adult son, Do-Joon. But when the boy is accused of murdering a local teenager her maternal instincts go into overdrive and she refuses to believe he could do such a thing even though his own memories of what happened that fateful night are sketchy at best. Getting nowhere with the attorney she hired to take his case, she decides to do some amateur sleuthing herself with the aid of Do-Joon’s unsavory friend Jin-Tae. As the plot becomes increasingly tangled some sordid secrets are laid bare and a thread of truth begins to take shape. Meanwhile, however, Do-Joon is beginning to recall a few memories of his own including a childhood incident Mrs. Yoon would rather keep buried. This is a fast-paced joyride of a film laced with deadpan humour and exhilarating camerawork that has you running down alleyways and hiding in closets. But just when you’re thoroughly hooked you suddenly realize director Joon-Ho has been setting you up as he steers his film into darker territory complete with a few surprise twists and a brilliantly executed finale. Sharp, crisp, and featuring an incredible performance by Kim Hye-Ja as the frantic mother. Bravo!!
